Our coaching philosophy is to nurture and increase self-confidence, teamwork, respect, responsibility, and positivity in all athletes that we come in contact with. We work to encourage all athletes to do their best in everything that they do on and off the field and hope to teach them that running can be a life long sport.
Glennis Seldon, Head Coach
This will be Coach G’s 6th year coaching the Girls Cross Country Program, 5th year coaching the Boys Cross Country Program, and 4th year (7th season) at the Head Track and Field Coach. Glennis ran Cross Country and Track at Long Beach Wilson H.S. for 4 years.
She took over the Girls Cross Country program in 2012. The Lancers improved tremendously, having two runners in the top 14, one being the only freshman girl. The team placed 3rd at Moore League and 7th in their CIF divisional race. A huge improvement from the previous year in which the team placed 12th.
At the end of her first Cross Country season in 2013, Glennis took over both the track girls and boys distance programs. She helped the young team produce numerous individual personal records, 8 medalist at Moore League Championships, 1600m Boys Varsity League Champion and 2 800m runner-ups, CIF Division 1 800m Boys Champion who finished 9th overall at the 2013 California State T&F Championships in Fresno, CA.
Glennis has been running for over 20 years. Her Wilson Cross Country team won Moore League two years in a row and she was the Cross Country League Champion in 2001 and 2002 taking the team to the XC state meet. In 2003, Glennis was a CIF Finals Division 1 qualifier in the 1600m finishing in 6th place with a time of 5:10. She graduated with a Bachelors in Communication from Oral Roberts University in 2007, where she competed for the Eagles 3 of the 4 years. Glennis is now an elite middle distance runner for Brooks, Fitness Coach at OrangeTheory Fitness and a Real Estate Agent.
Daniel Sorenson, Assistant XC Coach & Jumps Coach
This will be Coach Daniel’s 3rd season with the Lakewood Cross Country Program and Track Distance Program. He focuses on the hurdles for the Track Team. Daniel is an Lancer Alumnae and ran Cross Country and Track at Lakewood High School from 2002-2006 with a PR of 14:54 at Woodbridge Invitational in 2004. He continued to run in college and ran for Shorter University 2010-13 where he was the 2012 NAIA National Champion in the 3k Steeplechase with the PR of 8:50. He also was a 2012 Olympic qualifier in the 3k Steeplechase. He has been running for over 13 years.
Daniel was the 2012-2013 sports photographer at Shorter University and also the photographer for the 2012-2013 NAIA National Football Championships. Daniel graduated for Shorter University in Rome, Georgia in 2013 with a Bachelors in Art and minor in Photography. He trains and continues to compete.
Taylor Cudequest – Assistant Sprints/Hurdles/Jumps Coach
This will be Coach Taylor’s first season with the LakeWood Track & Field Program. Taylor went to Pascack Hills High School in New Jersey where he was an All American in the Decathlon. He continued to run in college at California State University: Northridge where he was a Big West contender in the Decathlon, Long Jump, and 4x400m Relay. Taylor graduated CSUN with his Bachelors in Mathematics and graduated in the top 5 percent of his class.
While coaching at Lakewood Coach Taylor is training professionally for the Decathlon at Cerritos college under Coach Christopher Richardson. Taylor has been doing Track for 10 years now and is excited to be coaching under Coach G.
Tanner Nelson, Throws Coach – Coach Tanner Graduated from Lakewood High school in 2012. Where he competed as a Thrower. He also played Football and was part of the wrestling team. He Currently works at Long Beach Poly working as a Instructional Aid-Special working with special ed students. He also works in the beautiful state of Montana during the summer at a camp called
Camp-Make-a-Dream. Coach Tanner is excited to be coaching this year.
Aaron Volkoff, Strength & Conditioning/ Assist. Throws Coach –
Coach Volkoff, assistant throws coach – graduated from UC Davis in 2000 with a degree in exercise science. He joined the Lakewood teaching staff in 2002 as a science teacher and coach. While at Lakewood he has worked with various groups as a strength and conditioning coach as well as a position and event coach including Track & Field, Cross Country, Football, Water Polo, Softball, and Volleyball. He currently teaches applied medical terminology, and the Long Beach Memorial Healthcare Simulation Program. He also is the link crew coordinator. Coach Volkoff is currently in his 17th year as a coach for the Lakewood track and field program which included eight years as the head coach.
